The Madison City Commission gave its approval on Monday to a contract between the Community Center and the Mitchell Aquatic Club to use the center's swimming pool for swim practice and swim meets.
According to Aaron Walter, Community Center director, some Madison residents are interested in creating an aquatics club similar to Mitchell's. However, instead of starting an independent group, they would prefer to spend some time learning from experienced organizers about planning, operations and other areas of club management.
Walter said the Madison organizers wanted to "start as a satellite club of the Mitchell Aquatic Club."
The Mitchell Aquatic Club lost its latest swimming facility on Feb. 28 when the club's above-ground swimming pool collapsed and flooded the Northstar Plaza in Mitchell. Walter said the flooding incident had little to do with the contract between the swim club and the center.
According to Walter, the Mitchell club had arranged the use of a swimming pool in Huron as an interim solution to the group's pool collapse until their facility problems were resolved.
Walter did tell the city commissioners that some Mitchell Aquatic swimmers may visit the Madison pool to work with local swimmers.
The agreement between the center and club will last for one year with the possibility of renewal during successive years.
The parties did agree to practice fees amounting to $5 per hour in 2010, $10 per hour in 2011, and $12.50 per hour in 2012. The fees stay at $12.50 during each year thereafter. The fees for swim meets -- per meet, per day -- amount to $400 during summer and $650 during winter.
