Absentee voting starts in school district

Absentee voting has started for the 2010 spring election held by the Madison Central School District that will elect three members of the school board and answer a referral question regarding a four-year, $250,000 opt-out. Cindy Callies, school district business manager, reported that the printer provided the election ballots late on Thursday. Registered voters living in the Madison School District can fill out and cast their absentee ballots by going to the business office at Madison High School.
Callies also plans to conduct absentee voting on March 15-16 at the Madison Middle School during parent-teacher conferences.
"We'll be conducting absentee voting at the middle school from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday and Tuesday during the conferences," Callies said. "It may be more convenient for people to vote on those days."
In the election, voters will select three school board members from four candidates -- Tom Farrell, Paul Weist, Janice J. Weber and Ryan Hegg -- to serve three-year terms. The top three vote-getters will obtain seats on the school board.
District voters will also determine with a majority vote whether to continue an opt-out from state property tax limitations. The four-year opt-out will continue additional property tax collections of $250,000 per year that the school district has assessed since 2006. Madison's first opt-out ended this year.
The school district will hold its spring election on April 13 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m at the Downtown Armory. However, voters can cast absentee ballots if they choose to do so before April 13. All absentee ballot requests have to be made before 3 p.m. on Election Day.
Before voting, school district residents must be properly registered to vote. In-person voter registration is conducted at the auditor's office at the Lake County Courthouse. District officials have also placed a link on the district's Web site at http://madison.k12.sd.us. to the South Dakota Secretary of State's Web site. At the secretary of state's Web site, residents can download a voter registration application and turn it in or mail it to the Auditor's Office, 200 E. Center St., Madison, S.D., 57042.
Voters can also register at any of the Madison public school offices and have the forms delivered for them to the Auditor's Office.
March 29 is the last day to register for the April 13 election.
Voters can obtain an absentee ballot request at all of the public schools, but they must turn in the completed applications at the district business office in the high school at 800 N.E. 9th St. Applicants must provide a valid photo ID when they submit their absentee ballot application.
Absentee voters can obtain an application online at the district's Web site by using another link that appears on the Internet home page. If absentee voters want to submit their application for a ballot by mail, they can have a notary seal placed on the form and mail it to the Business Office, Madison Central School District, 800 N.E. 9th St., Madison, S.D., 57042.
