Dakota State University student Lisa Chase of Salem is one of 17 students who will present results from their undergraduate research projects to legislators in Pierre on Thursday. The presentation is part of the 2010 Student Research Poster Session, which will be held from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Capitol Rotunda. "The work of these student researchers is nationally competitive," said Gary Johnson, system vice president of research for the South Dakota Board of Regents. "Their excellent work demonstrates first-hand the important linkages between research and a quality higher education experience." Chase is majoring in exercise science at DSU with a minor in business. For her research project, Chase visited with residents age 55 and older who went to The Community Center in Madison. She talked to eight men and eight women and collected basic information about them, as well as information about whether they lift weights, who got them started and how much exercise they did. What she found, Chase said, is that the men were more likely to focus on strength training and the women focused more on programs that also allow for social interaction, like the Active and Ageless program. "What I found out is they're out there, but it's also their place to meet," she said, "and they're very good about getting up there." Chase will be presenting her research along with students from Black Hills State University, Northern State University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, South Dakota State University, the University of South Dakota, the University of Sioux Falls, Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network, Oglala Lakota College and EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) and Sinte Gleska University and EPSCoR. This is the 13th year for the Student Research Poster Session.
