Chester superintendent resigns; seeks same post
By ELISA SAND, Staff Reporter 12/31/2009
Mark Greguson
A second Lake County school district was faced with the sudden resignation of its superintendent this year. At the Chester School Soard's November meeting, Superintendent Mark Greguson announced his resignation, which would take effect Dec. 31 (today) -- the same day that Madison Superintendent Vince Schaefer is done.

When he announced his resignation, Greguson indicated that the move was being done in an effort to begin drawing retirement benefits and to seek re-employment with the district beginning in January.

Chester Board President Pat Scott said that since Greguson submitted his resignation, the district has opened the position and received four applications, one of which is from Greguson.

In the next two weeks, Scott said, each of the candidates will be interviewed. The next board meeting is Jan. 11, at which time the new hire will be announced.

Scott said that Greguson's resignation did come as a surprise to the board.

"Mark has been a super superintendent," Scott said. "He's been great. The board was surprised at the move. We didn't see that one coming."

Greguson has been with the Chester Area School District since 1995. In that time, Greguson has led the district in several moves forward, including the integration of smartboards in the classrooms and a move toward laptop integration at the high school, which started in 2006.

Greguson also spearheaded the establishment of a cyber school, which was launched in the fall of 2005. The goal for the cyber school was to provide high school courses via an intranet (restricted internet) connection to interested students living on Hutterite colonies across the state.

The cyber school now reaches students at 28 colonies and also supports education for students enrolled in the district's alternative education program.

If Greguson is selected for the position, Scott said, his starting salary would be negotiated.

Until the position is filled, Greguson said, administrative duties will fall to the balance of the administrative staff -- High School Principal Mike Reinhiller, Elementary Principal Faith Stratton and Business Manager Kristi Lewis.
