Walleye fishing league will start May 19
By CHUCK CLEMENT, Staff Reporter 03/11/2010
Local anglers interested in joining the Lake Area Walleye Club for its second fishing league season should circle May 19 on their calendars.

That's the date of the first competition in an eight-event season, which will start at 5 p.m. on the third Wednesday in May on Brant Lake.

Mike Dorris of Madison, a league organizer, said the competitions are scheduled every other Wednesday through the end of August. Different from 2009, the competition hours were expanded, running from 5-9:30 p.m. with no penalty for competitors arriving late.

"Teams can sign up in the middle of the season, as long as they do so before an event starts," Dorris said.

Judges will only weigh six walleyes or saugers after each competition, with up to two fish more than 20 inches long and minimum length at 14 inches or per state regulations.

Participants do not need to have membership to fish in any league event, and organizers expect each team to have two or three anglers. Substitutes are allowed on the teams, but to qualify for Team of the Year points, each team must have one regular member.

According to Dorris, the fishing league will serve as a qualifier for the 2011 Cabela's National Team Championship. In 2009, two teams from the Lake Area Walleye Club were awarded spots in the 2010 Cabela's NTC scheduled on June 5-6 in Oshkosh, Wis. Dorris said the club could receive two to four spots in the 2011 Cabela's NTC.

The fees to participate in the South Dakota fishing league were set at $20 per night per angler with a $40 minimum, but children age 15 or younger fish for free. A $20 per person annual membership fee is required for teams competing in the Team of the year contest.

According to Dorris, the Lakes Area Walleye Club will conduct a more-than 100 percent payout with 80 percent of fee money paid for each event, 20 percent of fees assigned to the Team of the Year award, a $500 "Big Fish Pot," and sponsorship to the Cabela's NTC.

During events, 60 percent of fees are assigned to first place, 25 percent to second place, and 15 percent to third place.

Prostrollo Automall.com has sponsored a $500 Big Fish Pot awarded to the heaviest walleye weighed during 2010 from a league event. No additional entry fee is required to join the contest, and fishermen are automatically entered when they join the league events.

One Stop in Madison will provide a 2011 NTC sponsorship, which has a value up to $300, to the Team of the Year. Jerseys Sports Bar will award a $20 gift certificate to each event's winner, and One Stop will hold a league-night receipts drawing for a prize package.

During the eight-event season, the results from the best six events are assigned to Team of the Year standings. The scheduled events are on May 19, Brant Lake; June 2, Lake Thompson; June 16, Lake Poinsett; June 30, Lake Madison; July 14, Lake Sinai; July 28, Lake Vermillion; Aug. 11. Lake Madison; and Aug. 25, Lake Sinai.
